Gi vs No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu: What's the Difference?
Gi Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is trained in a traditional uniform you can grip for control and submissions, while No-Gi is trained in a rash guard and shorts with no jacket to hold. Gi tends to be slower and more technical; No-Gi is faster and more athletic. Beginners can start with either at Gracie Humaita.
If you’re new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, “Gi” and “No-Gi” are two of the first terms you’ll hear — and they can be confusing. The short version: it’s the same art, trained in two different uniforms, and each one shapes how the game is played. This page breaks down the differences in plain language, explains which is better for beginners, and shows you how to start training at our Reno and Sparks academies.
Ready to try it firsthand? Begin with our 3 intro classes for $30 and check the current class times.

What Is Gi Jiu-Jitsu?
The Gi (sometimes called a kimono) is the traditional uniform: a heavy cotton jacket, pants, and a belt that marks your rank. The jacket and pants give both you and your training partner something to grip.
That grip changes everything. In the Gi, you can grab collars, sleeves, and pant legs to control your opponent, slow the pace, and set up a huge range of chokes and submissions using the fabric itself. Because you can hold someone in place, the Gi game tends to be more methodical, technical, and strategic — which is why many instructors consider it an excellent foundation for learning detailed technique.
What Is No-Gi Jiu-Jitsu?
No-Gi is trained in a rash guard (a fitted athletic shirt) and shorts or spats — no jacket, no collar, no fabric to grab. Instead of gripping clothing, you control your opponent using body positioning, underhooks, and direct grips on the body itself.
With nothing to slow things down, No-Gi is generally faster, sweatier, and more athletic. Because there are no fabric grips, it shares a lot of overlap with wrestling and mixed martial arts (MMA), which is why fighters and athletes often gravitate toward it.
Gi vs No-Gi: The Key Differences
Uniform: Gi uses a traditional jacket, pants, and belt. No-Gi uses a rash guard and shorts.
Grips: In the Gi, you grip the fabric for control. In No-Gi, you control the body directly.
Pace: The Gi tends to be slower and more technical. No-Gi is faster and more scramble-heavy.
Technique: The Gi has more fabric-based chokes and controls. No-Gi relies more on body locks, underhooks, and leg entanglements.
Carryover: No-Gi translates more directly to MMA and wrestling. The Gi is often credited with building precise, detail-oriented technique.
Neither is “better.” They’re two sides of the same art, and training both makes you a more complete grappler.
Which Should a Beginner Start With?
You can start with either — there’s no wrong choice. A few things to consider:
If you want to build a deep technical foundation and don’t mind a slower, more methodical pace, the Gi is a fantastic starting point. If you’re drawn to a faster, more athletic style, are interested in MMA, or simply prefer training without a heavy uniform, No-Gi may feel more natural.
The honest answer most experienced practitioners give: try both. Many students train Gi and No-Gi in the same week and find that each one sharpens the other. Our intro program lets you experience the academy before deciding, and you’re welcome to ask the instructor which classes fit your goals. You can also meet our coaches on the instructors page.
Our No-Gi Program in Reno & Sparks
At Gracie Humaita, we teach authentic Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the lineage of Helio Gracie, and our schedule includes No-Gi training alongside traditional Gi classes. Whether you want to focus on No-Gi, Gi, or both, one membership covers unlimited access at both our Reno and Sparks locations.

What to Wear (Quick Guide)
- Gi class: A Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Gi and belt. For your very first trial, comfortable athletic clothes are fine while you decide.
- No-Gi class: A rash guard or fitted t-shirt and shorts or spats — avoid clothing with pockets, zippers, or buttons.
- Both: You train barefoot, so bring sandals for walking off the mat, plus a water bottle.

WHY BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU
Why Jiu-Jitsu Is the #1 Self-Defense System
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is the martial art trusted by the FBI, US Army Special Forces, and police departments nationwide for close-quarters self-defense. Unlike striking arts that depend on size and speed, BJJ uses leverage, body mechanics, and technique to control opponents on the ground — where statistics show most real confrontations end up.
Research in the National Institutes of Health confirms BJJ delivers measurable improvements in cardiovascular fitness, body composition, balance, cognitive function, and mental health — including significant reductions in anxiety and stress. Our Sparks students consistently describe Jiu-Jitsu as the first workout they’ve ever actually looked forward to.
At Gracie Humaita Sparks, you learn the same proven system used by professionals — taught by credentialed black belt instructors in a dedicated, family-friendly academy serving Spanish Springs, Wingfield Springs, D’Andrea, Sun Valley, and the greater Sparks community.
