KIDS PROGRAM

Reno's #1 Kids Jiu-Jitsu Program

Our kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu program in Reno teaches children ages 4–13 authentic Gracie self-defense techniques in a structured, fun, and supportive environment. Unlike generic kids’ martial arts programs, our curriculum comes directly from the Gracie Humaita lineage — the family that created BJJ — and is adapted specifically for young learners.

Our South Reno academy at 9333 Double R Blvd, Suite 1100 is located in the Double R Business Corridor — just 5 minutes from Damonte Ranch, 7 minutes from Double Diamond and South Meadows, and a short drive from Steamboat, Galena, and SE Reno. Families also come from Midtown, the University area, and across the Truckee Meadows.

Two Age Groups, Proper Instruction: Our Kids 4–9 and Kids 10–13 programs ensure your child trains with appropriate partners and receives age-appropriate coaching. Classes balance structured Jiu-Jitsu technique with engaging drills that keep kids motivated and excited to come back.

Dual-Location Access: Your kids’ membership includes training at both our South Reno and Sparks academies — giving Reno families maximum scheduling flexibility throughout the week. View the full kids class schedule →

*Professor Alexandre Gracie is now a 3rd Degree Black Belt.

Your Child's First Jiu-Jitsu Class in Reno

Kids Jiu-Jitsu Reno, NV

What to wear: Your child should wear comfortable athletic clothes — a t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants. Kids train barefoot on our clean, professional mats. After the introductory period, they’ll receive a gi (traditional BJJ uniform) as part of their membership.

Class structure: Kids classes begin with a fun warm-up, followed by age-appropriate technique instruction. Children partner with other kids their size and age, guided by our instructors every step of the way. Classes blend real Jiu-Jitsu skills with engaging games and drills that keep kids excited about training.

The environment: Parents across South Reno consistently tell us they chose our academy because of the culture. Our instructors are patient, encouraging, and skilled at working with children. There’s zero tolerance for bullying — kids learn to respect their training partners and themselves. Many Reno families train together, with parents attending adult classes while their kids are on the mat.

Schedule: Kids classes at the Reno location run Mon–Thu afternoons + Sat mornings, with separate time slots for ages 4–9 and 10–13. Your membership also includes access to kids classes at our Sparks academy. View the complete schedule →

RENO KIDS BJJ

Kids Jiu-Jitsu Programs by Age Group

Kids 4–9: Little Champions BJJ — Reno

Our youngest Jiu-Jitsu students learn foundational BJJ movements, basic self-defense positions, and partner coordination through structured games and technique drills. At this age, the focus is building body awareness, listening skills, and confidence — while planting the seeds of real Jiu-Jitsu technique that they’ll carry into the upper program.

Parents across Damonte Ranch, Double Diamond, and South Meadows consistently report their kids show improved focus at school, better emotional regulation, and a new sense of self-confidence within just weeks of starting. The CDC recommends 60+ minutes of daily physical activity for ages 6–17 — our classes exceed that while building life skills no traditional sport can match.

Classes for ages 4–9 at the Reno academy: Mon–Thu 4:30 PM, Sat 10 AM. Try 3 kids classes for $30 →

Kids 10–13: Junior BJJ — Reno

Our pre-teen program builds on the fundamentals with more technical Jiu-Jitsu instruction — including takedowns, guard passing, submissions, and escape sequences. Students at this age develop real sparring ability in a controlled, supervised environment. The belt progression system gives kids 10–13 clear goals to work toward, building discipline and work ethic that transfers directly to academics and other activities.

This is the age where anti-bullying confidence becomes especially valuable. Kids learn not just how to defend themselves, but the emotional composure to de-escalate situations — a skill that Reno parents value highly. Classes for ages 10–13 at the Reno academy: Mon–Thu 5:15 PM, Sat 10 AM.

Why BJJ Over Other Kids Activities in Reno

Unlike striking-based martial arts, Jiu-Jitsu allows children to practice techniques at full resistance safely — no punching or kicking means fewer injuries and a more positive training experience. And unlike team sports where kids can hide on the bench, BJJ requires every child to engage, problem-solve, and persist through challenges individually — building resilience and self-reliance that carries into every area of life.

WHY KIDS JIU-JITSU

What Reno Parents See After Kids Start BJJ

Parents who enroll their children in Jiu-Jitsu consistently report the same pattern: within the first month, their kids show improved focus at school, better behavior at home, and a quiet, genuine confidence that wasn’t there before. This isn’t accidental — it’s built into how BJJ is taught.

Jiu-Jitsu requires children to solve physical problems in real time, listen to instruction, respect their training partners, and persist through challenges. These aren’t lessons you can teach with a lecture — they’re developed through direct experience on the mat. Research confirms that martial arts training improves cognitive function, emotional regulation, and social skills in children across all age groups.

At our South Reno academy, your child learns from credentialed Gracie Humaita instructors who specialize in youth development — not part-time coaches running a side program. Families across Damonte Ranch, Double Diamond, South Meadows, Steamboat, and the greater Reno area trust us with their children’s growth on and off the mat.

I’ve trained at this Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school for a few months and it’s a great experience. The instructor has a lot of energy but is very kind, which makes a big difference when you’re learning. He takes the time to explain techniques clearly and makes sure everyone understands, no matter their skill level. You can tell he cares about helping people improve and feel confident on the mat.

The school and its students are also very welcoming. Everyone is respectful and supportive, so it never feels intimidating even when you’re new. The teaching is solid and you can tell it comes from a real Gracie foundation—very focused on technique, control, and understanding the details. I’ve learned a lot in just a few months and I always look forward to training. I highly recommend this school for jiu jitsu.

Training under Alex was one of the most positive JiuJitsu experiences I’ve had. His knowledge of jiu jitsu is deep, and he has a great way of breaking things down so that both beginners and experienced students can understand and apply the techniques effectively.

What really sets him apart is his attitude and personality. He brings a great energy to every class and creates an environment that is enjoyable. He has a great sense of humor, keeps the atmosphere positive, and genuinely cares about the people he teaches! He’s the kind of coach who is not only skilled but also kind, generous with his time, and invested in helping his students grow.

I had the opportunity to compete under him on multiple occasions, and I always felt very well prepared going into tournaments. His coaching, guidance, and attention to detail made a huge difference in my confidence and performance!

I’ve had the privilege of learning from Professor Alexandre Garcia, and I can honestly say he is an exceptional Jiu-Jitsu instructor. His knowledge of the art is incredible, but what really stands out is how well he teaches it. He breaks techniques down in a way that makes them easy to understand for both beginners and advanced students.

Professor Alexandre creates a positive and respectful environment on the mats. He’s patient, supportive, and always takes the time to help students improve, no matter their skill level. On top of that, he has a great sense of humor and always keeps the class laughing, which makes training even more enjoyable.

You can tell he truly cares about his students’ progress and wants everyone to succeed. Training under him has not only improved my Jiu-Jitsu, but also my confidence and discipline. If you’re looking for a professor who is highly skilled, professional, funny, and genuinely invested in his students, I highly recommend training with Professor Alexandre. OSS

Our experience at Gracie Humaita studio in Reno has been nothing short of life-changing. What started as a place for my husband to try something new has become a second home and the people there truly feel like family.

The coaches created an environment that is disciplined but welcoming, challenging but supportive. They meet you where you are, whether you’re brand new or experienced, and push you in the best possible way. The instruction is thoughtful and technical, but it’s the culture that sets this place apart. There’s respect, encouragement, and a genuine investment in each person who walks through the door.

For my husband, this studio didn’t just improve his fitness — it transformed his health and his outlook on life. He’s stronger, more confident, and more grounded. Training here and the people he’s met have given him a renewed sense of purpose and resilience that carries into our home, our marriage, and every part of his life. The mental clarity and discipline he’s gained have been just as powerful as the physical transformation.

We are endlessly grateful for Alex and all the coaches and teammates who have poured into him and welcomed our family into theirs. If you’re looking for more than just a workout, this is the place.

It’s not just a gym. It’s family.

I’ve been training at Gracie Humaita Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and it’s honestly a great place to be. The gym is always clean and well taken care of, which makes training way better. The coaches are super nice, chill, and actually take time to help you learn instead of just rushing through stuff.
They’re also really flexible with schedules and understanding if you can’t make every class, which I appreciate. Everyone there is cool and respectful, so it’s a really positive environment to be in. Overall, it’s a great academy with good vibes and solid training.

COMMON QUESTIONS

Kids Jiu-Jitsu in Reno — Frequently Asked Questions

We accept children starting at age 4. Our Kids 4–9 and Kids 10–13 programs offer age-appropriate Jiu-Jitsu instruction so your child trains with partners their own size and developmental level.

We offer 3 introductory kids classes for just $30. After that, unlimited training at both our Reno and Sparks locations is $140/month. Your intro fee is applied toward the first month’s membership if you enroll.

Yes. Unlike striking martial arts, BJJ doesn’t involve punching or kicking — which means fewer injuries and a safer training environment for children. Kids practice techniques with partners their own size under direct instructor supervision. The “tap out” rule means your child always controls the intensity.

Absolutely. Kids who train BJJ develop two critical anti-bullying skills: the self-defense ability to protect themselves if needed, and the confidence to de-escalate situations without fighting. Reno parents consistently tell us this is one of the biggest changes they see in their children.

Kids 4–9: Mon–Thu 4:30 PM, Sat 10 AM. Kids 10–13: Mon–Thu 5:15 PM, Sat 10 AM. Your membership also includes access to kids classes at our Sparks location. Visit agjiujitsu.com/class-times for the most current schedule.

Just comfortable athletic clothes — t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants. Kids train barefoot. After the introductory classes, your child receives a gi (BJJ uniform) as part of their membership. No additional equipment purchase needed.

BJJ focuses on ground control and submissions using leverage — not strikes. This means kids can practice techniques at full intensity safely, which accelerates learning. BJJ also emphasizes problem-solving and adaptability rather than memorizing choreographed forms, building critical thinking skills that Reno parents see transfer directly to academics.
