BJJ Competitions: A Guide for First-Timers

Understanding BJJ Competitions

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) competitions are exhilarating events where practitioners put their skills to the test, seeking to outmaneuver and submit their opponents. If you’re a first-timer considering entering a BJJ competition, you’re about to embark on an exciting journey filled with challenges and personal growth. This guide will provide you with valuable insights and tips to help you navigate your first BJJ competition with confidence.

Before you step onto the mats, it’s crucial to understand the basics of BJJ competitions:

  1. Rules and Scoring: Familiarize yourself with the rules and scoring system used in BJJ competitions. Understanding how points are awarded and what constitutes a submission victory is essential.
  2. Weight Classes: Competitors are typically grouped into weight classes to ensure a fair and balanced competition. Make sure you register for the appropriate weight division.
  3. Gi vs. No-Gi: BJJ competitions can be held in either the gi (traditional uniform) or no-gi (without the traditional uniform) format. Choose the one that suits your preferences and training.

Preparing for Your First BJJ Competition

  1. Training: Train consistently in the weeks leading up to the competition. Focus on refining your techniques and improving your physical conditioning.
  2. Mock Competitions: Simulate competition scenarios during your training sessions. This will help you get used to the adrenaline rush and the pressure of competing.
  3. Mental Preparation: Develop a competition mindset. Visualize yourself performing well and staying calm under pressure. Mental preparation is as crucial as physical training.
  4. Weight Management: If necessary, manage your weight to ensure you meet the requirements of your chosen weight class. Be mindful of your diet and hydration leading up to the competition.

What to Expect on Competition Day

  1. Arrive Early: Arriving early gives you ample time to register, warm up, and acclimate to the competition environment.
  2. Proper Gear: Ensure you have all the necessary gear, including your gi or no-gi attire, belt, mouthguard, and any required protective gear.
  3. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Drink water and eat light, easily digestible meals throughout the day to maintain your energy levels.
  4. Warm-Up: Warm up thoroughly before your matches to prevent injuries and prepare your body for action.

During Your Matches

  1. Stay Calm: Nervousness is normal, but try to stay calm and focused during your matches. Remember your training and game plan.
  2. Breathe: Control your breathing to manage anxiety and maintain composure. Deep breaths can help you relax and think clearly.
  3. Stick to Your Game: Play to your strengths and execute the techniques you’re most comfortable with. Don’t stray too far from your game plan.
  4. Sportsmanship: Win or lose, always display good sportsmanship. Shake hands with your opponents, thank the referees, and be gracious in victory and defeat.

After Your Matches

  1. Reflect: Take time to reflect on your performance. What went well? What could you improve for next time? This self-assessment is essential for growth.
  2. Stay Positive: Whether you win or lose, remember that every competition is a learning experience. Use it as motivation to continue improving your BJJ skills.

Participating in your first BJJ competition is a significant milestone in your martial arts journey. With proper preparation, mental fortitude, and a positive attitude, you can make the most of this experience. Embrace the challenges, learn from your matches, and use the competition as a stepping stone to become a better Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. Good luck, and enjoy the journey!

I just had my first private session with Professor Alex and his wife Katy. I’m blown away by the amount of moves and practices they required just to get me more familiar and comfortable with my muscle memory. If you’re looking for any self-defense classes. This is exactly where you’ll get all the strength. My first session way exceeded my expectations. Alex and Katy are very intentional, passionate and super kind. I feel very blessed to find this gym as there isn’t many gyms that teaches you utilizing BJJ to self defense than competition. I’m very excited for my future grow with them!

Stopped into train at Gracie Humaita Reno while traveling for work and it was the best experience I ever had visiting a Jiu jitsu gym. Professor Alex was very warm and welcoming. He made me feel as if I’d been training with him for 10 years. Not only was he first class in customer service but instructed really clear and professional. He made sure everyone was safe but also training hard. Attentive to every student and their comprehension of the skills of the day. If I were going to move to Reno this is the gym/team I would immediately sign up to be a part of. When I’m in Reno again, it’s a no brainer I will be dropping in again. This is the gym to be at for world class Jiu jitsu. 🤙🏼

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We couldn’t be happier with our experience at Gracie’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This place is the real deal. Coach Alex is one of the best instructors I’ve seen. He has a rare ability to connect with kids. He expects respect and discipline, but balances it perfectly with a great sense of humor that keeps them engaged and excited to be there. The kids are learning real skills while genuinely having a great time, which is not easy to pull off. What stands out most is the culture. It is positive, structured, and focused on growth, both on and off the mat. You can tell they are not just teaching jiu jitsu, they are building confidence, character, and accountability. I am especially grateful we found this place. It has become more than just a gym for our family. Other family members train here as well, and it is something we all look forward to. That says a lot. If you are looking for a place that will challenge your kids, build discipline, and still make it fun, this is it. Highly recommend.

I’ve trained at this Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school for a few months and it’s a great experience. The instructor has a lot of energy but is very kind, which makes a big difference when you’re learning. He takes the time to explain techniques clearly and makes sure everyone understands, no matter their skill level. You can tell he cares about helping people improve and feel confident on the mat. The school and its students are also very welcoming. Everyone is respectful and supportive, so it never feels intimidating even when you’re new. The teaching is solid and you can tell it comes from a real Gracie foundation—very focused on technique, control, and understanding the details. I’ve learned a lot in just a few months and I always look forward to training. I highly recommend this school for jiu jitsu.
