Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu FAQ's

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art, combat sport, and self-defense system that focuses on grappling and ground fighting. It was developed in Brazil in the early 20th century by Carlos Gracie, who blended elements of Judo, Japanese Jujutsu, and other styles. BJJ promotes the concept that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend themselves against a bigger, stronger assailant by using leverage and proper technique – most notably by applying joint locks and chokeholds to defeat them.

Is BJJ dangerous?

No; when practiced properly under the supervision of a qualified instructor, BJJ is relatively safe. Like any contact sport or martial art, there is always a risk of injury, but this can be minimized by using proper safety gear and following the rules.

How long does it take to learn Jiu-Jitsu?

This varies from person to person, but generally, it takes several years of regular training to achieve a high level of proficiency in BJJ.

What are the benefits of learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

There are many benefits to learning BJJ, both physical and mental. Physically, BJJ can help improve your strength, flexibility, coordination, and cardiovascular fitness. It can also help you develop self-discipline, confidence, and focus. mentally, BJJ can help improve your problem-solving skills and provide a sense of calm in stressful situations.

What should I wear to a BJJ class?

For your first few classes, you can wear comfortable clothing such as sweatpants and a t-shirt. Once you become more involved in BJJ, you will need to purchase a Gi (a traditional martial arts uniform) and belts of different colors to signify your rank.

Do I need any special equipment to train Jiu-Jitsu?

No; all you need is a Gi and a belt. Some schools may require that you purchase additional training gear such as mouthguards and groin cups, but this is generally not necessary.

How much does it cost to learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

The cost of learning BJJ varies depending on the school you choose and the location. Private lessons are typically more expensive than group classes, but they can be worth the investment if you want to progress quickly. Many schools offer discounts for students who commit to long-term contracts, so it is important to shop around and compare prices before enrolling in a program.

What is the difference between BJJ and other martial arts?

BJJ is unique in that it focuses primarily on grappling and ground fighting, rather than striking. This makes it an effective self-defense system for smaller people who may not be able to defend themselves against a larger, stronger attacker using strikes. Additionally, the rules of sport BJJ competitions are designed to promote a safe and fair environment, making it an excellent martial art for people of all ages and experience levels.

How can I find a Jiu-Jitsu school in my area?

The best way to find a BJJ school near you is to search online or ask friends and family if they know of any good programs in the area. Once you have found a few schools that interest you, be sure to visit them in person to get a feel for the environment and the instructors before enrolling in a program.

What should I look for in a Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu instructor?

When choosing a BJJ instructor, it is important to find someone who is experienced and has a good reputation. You should also make sure that the instructor is certified by a reputable organization such as the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) or the United States Jujutsu Federation (USJJF). Additionally, you should feel comfortable with the instructor and have confidence in their ability to teach you the techniques safely and effectively.

Is there an age limit for learning martial arts?

No; people of all ages can learn and benefit from BJJ training. However, it is important to note that children under the age of 16 should only train under the supervision of a qualified instructor.

What are the risks associated with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

As with any physical activity, there is always a risk of injury when training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. However, this risk can be greatly reduced by following proper safety guidelines and practicing techniques with care. Most schools have insurance policies that cover students in the event of an injury, so be sure to ask about this before enrolling in a program.

Can I learn Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu online?

There are many instructional videos and online resources available for people who want to learn BJJ from home. However, it is important to note that nothing can replace the experience of training under the guidance of a qualified instructor. If you are serious about learning Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, we recommend finding a local school where you can train in person.

What are some of the benefits of learning self-defense?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an excellent way to improve your physical fitness, flexibility, and coordination. Additionally, BJJ can help you develop discipline, confidence, and focus. It is also a great way to meet new people and make friends. Finally, training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu can provide you with valuable self-defense skills that could one day save your life.

Is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu right for me?

If you are looking for a martial art that can help you improve your fitness, flexibility, and coordination while also providing you with valuable self-defense skills, then Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu may be right for you. However, it is important to keep in mind that BJJ requires a significant commitment of time and energy. If you are not prepared to make this commitment, then we recommend finding another activity that better suits your needs and interests.

I highly recommend signing up if you're considering it. Im a single mother and I was struggling with behavioral issues with my 4yr old. He lacks respect and discipline. Since starting Jiujitsu my son's behavior has improved so much. Even his day care has noticed a huge difference. It's nice to relax and turn my brain off while my son learn new life skills. The instructors are stern and do not play. They're here to teach and im so thankful I feel like I can breathe finally. My son is starting to listen and understand respect for me and his elders and its only been 2months since starting. 10/10 recommend
