Overcoming Jitters Before Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

Overcoming Jitters Before Your First Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Class

How to Feel Confident in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Starting something new is always a little intimidating, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is no exception. The idea of stepping onto the mat for the first time can feel overwhelming—images of seasoned practitioners effortlessly executing techniques might swirl in your head, making you question if you even belong.

Here’s the good news: everyone feels this way at first. Those same seasoned practitioners once stood in your shoes, nervous and unsure. Overcoming the first-class jitters isn’t just possible; it’s a rite of passage that builds confidence, resilience, and excitement for the journey ahead.

This guide will help you step onto the mat with confidence and embrace your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class.

1. Understand That Nerves Are Normal

It’s completely normal to feel anxious before trying something unfamiliar. Whether you’re worried about your fitness level, looking inexperienced, or making mistakes, remind yourself that every student at the gym started as a beginner.

Tip: Focus on Why You’re Starting

Ask yourself: “Why am I doing this?” Whether it’s for fitness, self-defense, or a new challenge, your reason will anchor you and keep you motivated.

2. Choose the Right Gym and Class

Selecting a welcoming gym (commonly called a “dojo” or “academy”) can make all the difference. Look for beginner-friendly classes with instructors who prioritize a positive learning environment. Read reviews, visit the gym, and ask questions before signing up.

Tip: Observe a Class First

If you’re nervous, consider watching a class before joining. Seeing how things flow will help demystify the experience.

3. Prepare Ahead of Time

Knowing what to expect and coming prepared can help calm your nerves. Here’s what you’ll typically need:

  • Clothing: Wear a clean gi (if required) or comfortable athletic wear.
  • Hygiene: Make sure you’re freshly showered, nails trimmed, and have clean gear.
  • Mindset: Approach the class with an open mind and a willingness to learn.

Tip: Arrive Early

Arriving 10–15 minutes early allows you to meet the instructor, settle in, and avoid the stress of rushing.

4. Be Ready to Learn, Not Master

Your first BJJ class isn’t about perfection; it’s about starting the process. No one expects you to roll (spar) like a pro or master techniques on day one.

Tip: Ask Questions

BJJ is a welcoming community, and most instructors and classmates are eager to help. If something doesn’t make sense, ask!

5. Focus on Small Wins

BJJ is about progress, not perfection. Celebrate small victories, like understanding a move or escaping a tough position. These moments build confidence over time.

Tip: Track Your Progress

After class, write down what you learned. This habit reinforces techniques and helps you see how far you’ve come.

6. Embrace Mistakes as Part of Learning

Mistakes are inevitable, and that’s a good thing—they’re where the most growth happens. Laugh them off and focus on improving.

Tip: Compare Yourself to Yesterday, Not Others

Don’t measure yourself against more experienced classmates. Compare yourself to who you were when you started.

7. Connect with Your Classmates

BJJ gyms are known for their camaraderie. Chat with your training partners and get to know them. Building relationships can make classes feel less intimidating and more enjoyable.

Tip: Join the Community

Many gyms host events, open mats, or social gatherings. Participating can deepen your connection and sense of belonging.

8. Give Yourself Permission to Feel Uncomfortable

It’s okay to feel out of your comfort zone. Growth often comes from discomfort. Trust the process and give yourself grace as you learn.

Tip: Stay Consistent

The more you show up, the more comfortable you’ll feel. Confidence is built through repetition and time.

I just had my first private session with Professor Alex and his wife Katy. I’m blown away by the amount of moves and practices they required just to get me more familiar and comfortable with my muscle memory. If you’re looking for any self-defense classes. This is exactly where you’ll get all the strength. My first session way exceeded my expectations. Alex and Katy are very intentional, passionate and super kind. I feel very blessed to find this gym as there isn’t many gyms that teaches you utilizing BJJ to self defense than competition. I’m very excited for my future grow with them!

Stopped into train at Gracie Humaita Reno while traveling for work and it was the best experience I ever had visiting a Jiu jitsu gym. Professor Alex was very warm and welcoming. He made me feel as if I’d been training with him for 10 years. Not only was he first class in customer service but instructed really clear and professional. He made sure everyone was safe but also training hard. Attentive to every student and their comprehension of the skills of the day. If I were going to move to Reno this is the gym/team I would immediately sign up to be a part of. When I’m in Reno again, it’s a no brainer I will be dropping in again. This is the gym to be at for world class Jiu jitsu. 🤙🏼

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ We couldn’t be happier with our experience at Gracie’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. This place is the real deal. Coach Alex is one of the best instructors I’ve seen. He has a rare ability to connect with kids. He expects respect and discipline, but balances it perfectly with a great sense of humor that keeps them engaged and excited to be there. The kids are learning real skills while genuinely having a great time, which is not easy to pull off. What stands out most is the culture. It is positive, structured, and focused on growth, both on and off the mat. You can tell they are not just teaching jiu jitsu, they are building confidence, character, and accountability. I am especially grateful we found this place. It has become more than just a gym for our family. Other family members train here as well, and it is something we all look forward to. That says a lot. If you are looking for a place that will challenge your kids, build discipline, and still make it fun, this is it. Highly recommend.

I’ve trained at this Gracie Jiu-Jitsu school for a few months and it’s a great experience. The instructor has a lot of energy but is very kind, which makes a big difference when you’re learning. He takes the time to explain techniques clearly and makes sure everyone understands, no matter their skill level. You can tell he cares about helping people improve and feel confident on the mat. The school and its students are also very welcoming. Everyone is respectful and supportive, so it never feels intimidating even when you’re new. The teaching is solid and you can tell it comes from a real Gracie foundation—very focused on technique, control, and understanding the details. I’ve learned a lot in just a few months and I always look forward to training. I highly recommend this school for jiu jitsu.
