Starting BJJ: Essential Guide for Your First Class

BJJ for Beginners: What You Need to Know Before Your First Class

Embarking on your Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) journey is an exciting decision that promises not only to improve your physical fitness but also to develop your mental acuity and self-defense skills. As a beginner, stepping onto the mat for the first time can be intimidating, but understanding what to expect and how to prepare can make your experience enjoyable and rewarding. Here’s a beginner’s guide to starting BJJ, covering what to wear, what to expect, and the basic etiquette you should follow in a BJJ gym.

What to Wear

When you’re just starting out, the right attire can make a significant difference in your comfort and ability to perform on the mat.

  • Gi or No-Gi: Find out if your class is Gi (where you wear a traditional BJJ kimono) or No-Gi (where you wear athletic clothing such as a rash guard and shorts). Most schools offer both types of classes.
  • Choosing a Gi: If you are attending a Gi class, you might be able to borrow a Gi from the gym for your first few classes. When purchasing your own, look for a Gi that is specifically made for BJJ, as they are designed to withstand the pulling and grabbing that occur during training.
  • No-Gi Apparel: For No-Gi classes, wear tight-fitting moisture-wicking tops known as rash guards and board shorts or spats (tight-fitting athletic leggings). Avoid loose clothing and anything with pockets or zippers that can catch fingers and toes.

What to Expect

Your first class will be an introduction to the fundamentals of BJJ, focusing on basic techniques and the foundational principles of the sport.

  • Warm-up: Classes typically start with a warm-up focusing on general fitness and movements that are specific to BJJ, like rolling, bridging, and shrimping.
  • Technique Instruction: After warming up, the instructor will demonstrate techniques. You will practice these techniques in a controlled manner with a partner.
  • Rolling: If you’re ready, you may end the class with some light sparring sessions, known as “rolling,” which allows you to apply techniques in a live setting. Don’t worry about your performance; this is a learning experience.
  • Pace Yourself: BJJ can be physically demanding. Feel free to take a break if you need to, and drink plenty of water throughout the class.

Basic Etiquette in a BJJ Gym

Understanding and following gym etiquette will help you integrate into the BJJ community more smoothly and ensure a respectful and safe environment for everyone.

  • Hygiene: BJJ involves close physical contact, making good hygiene essential. Always come to class with a clean Gi or attire, trim your nails, and tie back long hair.
  • Respect the Space: Show respect to your instructors and fellow students. Listen attentively when techniques are being demonstrated and bow when entering or leaving the mat as a sign of respect.
  • Tapping Out: Tapping out is a safety mechanism. If a submission hold causes you discomfort or pain, tap your partner or the mat to signal them to release the hold.
  • Ask Questions: Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Your instructors and fellow classmates are valuable resources for your learning.

Your first BJJ class is the beginning of a challenging yet rewarding journey. By coming prepared, respecting gym etiquette, and engaging with the community, you’ll be able to fully enjoy the art of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Remember, every black belt starts as a white belt. Enjoy the process, learn from your experiences, and embrace the journey ahead.

I highly recommend signing up if you're considering it. Im a single mother and I was struggling with behavioral issues with my 4yr old. He lacks respect and discipline. Since starting Jiujitsu my son's behavior has improved so much. Even his day care has noticed a huge difference. It's nice to relax and turn my brain off while my son learn new life skills. The instructors are stern and do not play. They're here to teach and im so thankful I feel like I can breathe finally. My son is starting to listen and understand respect for me and his elders and its only been 2months since starting. 10/10 recommend
