The Oldest Martial Art in the World, Taught in Sparks

I’ve had students walk into our gym and ask some version of this question before they even change into a gi. It’s a fair thing to wonder. If you’re going to spend real time learning something, you want to know where it came from. At Gracie Humaita Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Martial Arts Sparks, we teach a system with roots that go back thousands of years — and understanding that history changes how you think about training.

What Is the Oldest Martial Art in the World in Sparks?

The oldest martial art in the world with documented history is widely considered to be wrestling, specifically the grappling systems practiced in ancient Mesopotamia and Egypt dating back over 5,000 years. Cave paintings in France estimated at 15,000 years old depict what appear to be wrestling techniques. Ancient Sumerian artwork from around 3000 BCE shows grappling holds that look strikingly familiar to any modern jiu-jitsu practitioner. Ancient Greek wrestling — pankration — became an Olympic sport in 648 BCE and combined striking with ground fighting.

For those of us teaching grappling in Sparks, this history matters. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu descends directly from Japanese Judo, which itself descends from older Japanese Jujutsu systems that trace their core concepts back to Chinese and Indian grappling traditions. The line from ancient wrestling to what we do on the mats today is direct and unbroken. You are not learning something invented last decade. You are practicing a method of human movement that has been tested, refined, and passed down for millennia.

Why the Age of a Martial Art Actually Matters?

Here’s what I tell beginners who are weighing their options: longevity is a filter. Anything that has survived 5,000 years of human conflict has been tested against reality repeatedly. Techniques that didn’t work got cut. Principles that protected people got kept.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu carries that same filtering process. Mitsuyo Maeda, a Japanese Judo champion, brought his system to Brazil in the early 1900s. Every technique in our curriculum has been pressure-tested in thousands of real matches and real altercations. That’s not marketing language. That’s a documented record.

From Ancient Grappling to a Sparks Gym Mat

Most people in Sparks don’t think about this lineage when they’re signing up for their first class. They want to get fit, learn self-defense, or find something their kids will actually stick with. Those are all valid reasons. But I’ve found that students who understand where the art comes from tend to stay longer. They treat the details of a guard pass or an escape differently when they know those details were refined over generations.

In my experience coaching adults and kids here in Nevada, the ones who burn out fastest are the ones chasing entertainment. The ones who stay for years are the ones who grasp that they’re learning something genuinely old and genuinely useful — not a trend.

That’s part of why we follow the Gracie Humaita lineage specifically. It connects directly to the source. You can read more about our team and instructors if you want to understand who we are and how we teach.

What This Means for Your Training in 2026?

Ancient wrestling, Jujutsu, Judo, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu — the common thread through all of them is this: a smaller, less athletic person can control or submit a larger, stronger one if the technique is sound. Research published by the National Institutes of Health confirms that grappling-based arts consistently outperform striking-only systems in real-world self-defense scenarios, largely because most physical confrontations end up on the ground.

If you’re an adult looking for self-defense skills that hold up under pressure, or a parent looking for kids martial arts classes that build real discipline alongside physical competence, this history should give you confidence. You’re not betting on something unproven. You’re joining a lineage that has been validated across cultures and centuries.

We offer an intro class for just $30 — one session where you can feel whether this is right for you before committing to anything. We also offer private classes for people who want to accelerate their learning or have specific goals. Check our current class times to find a schedule that works for you, and browse our blog for more on training, history, and what to expect as a beginner.

You can read what current and former students think on our reviews page — real accounts from real people who train here in Sparks.

We had the opportunity to drop in while we were in town, and we couldn’t have asked for a better experience. Walking into a new gym can be intimidating for a child, but the coaches and students immediately made us feel welcome. The coaches took the time to include everyone, offered excellent instruction, and created a positive environment where the kids could learn, work hard, and have fun. It was obvious they genuinely care about every child who steps on the mats, even those who are just visiting. We’re so thankful they welcomed us for a class and treated us like part of the team. We’re grateful for the hospitality and look forward to dropping in again the next time we’re in town. If you’re looking for a place where kids are supported, challenged, and encouraged, we highly recommend stopping by.

I highly recommend signing up if you're considering it. Im a single mother and I was struggling with behavioral issues with my 4yr old. He lacks respect and discipline. Since starting Jiujitsu my son's behavior has improved so much. Even his day care has noticed a huge difference. It's nice to relax and turn my brain off while my son learn new life skills. The instructors are stern and do not play. They're here to teach and im so thankful I feel like I can breathe finally. My son is starting to listen and understand respect for me and his elders and its only been 2months since starting. 10/10 recommend

It is such a welcoming environment, and seeing my girls look forward to every class is amazing.
