What to Expect on Your First Jiu-Jitsu Class (+ Mat Etiquette)
On your first Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class at Gracie Humaita in Reno or Sparks, arrive 15 minutes early, wear a t-shirt and shorts, and train barefoot. No experience is needed. You’ll warm up, drill basic techniques at your own pace, and tap out anytime — you always control the intensity.
Walking into a martial arts academy for the first time can feel intimidating. It shouldn’t. Most people who step onto our mats have zero grappling background, and our entire first-class experience is built around making beginners comfortable. This page walks you through exactly what happens on day one — and the simple etiquette that keeps everyone safe, clean, and respected.
Ready to book? Start with our 3 intro classes for $30 and check the current class times before you arrive.
Before You Arrive
Wear comfortable athletic clothes. A t-shirt and shorts or sweatpants are perfect for your first class — no gi (uniform) required to start. You’ll train barefoot on the mat, so leave shoes at the edge.
Arrive 15 minutes early. This gives you time to meet the instructor, get a quick tour, fill out a waiver, and watch the start of class settle in. You can also walk in 15 minutes before any session to begin a trial right away.
Eat light and hydrate. Train on a light stomach and bring a water bottle. Jiu-Jitsu is a full-body workout, and the CDC notes that regular physical activity improves strength, mood, and sleep — first-timers usually feel that effect immediately.
You don’t need to be fit or flexible first. A common myth is that you should “get in shape” before starting. The opposite is true: the class gets you in shape. Come as you are.
What Happens During Class
A typical beginner-friendly session at our Reno and Sparks academies follows a predictable rhythm:
Warm-up. Light movement and basic motor drills to loosen up and learn how to move on the mat safely.
Technique instruction. The instructor demonstrates one or two techniques, breaks them into steps, and explains the “why” behind each. Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu rewards leverage and timing over size and strength, which is what lets a smaller person control a larger one.
Drilling. You partner up and repeat the technique slowly and cooperatively. There’s no pressure to “win” — drilling is about building muscle memory.
Optional live training. More experienced students may roll (spar) at the end. As a beginner, you are never required to spar on day one. When you do, you start light, and you tap out the moment anything feels uncomfortable.
You control the intensity the entire time. Tapping — a light tap on your partner or the mat — instantly ends an exchange. It’s a normal, expected part of training, not a failure.

Mat Etiquette: The Essentials
Jiu-Jitsu has a respect-based culture rooted in its traditional lineage. Our academy teaches authentic Gracie Humaita Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu under the lineage of Helio Gracie, and the etiquette below reflects standards used in academies worldwide and codified by the sport’s governing body, the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF).
Hygiene comes first. Show up clean, with short fingernails and toenails, and clean clothes every session. Because grappling involves close contact, hygiene protects everyone — Mayo Clinic explains how skin infections like ringworm spread through direct contact and shared surfaces, which is exactly why we keep mats sanitized and ask the same of students.
No shoes on the mat, ever. Bare feet on the mat; sandals or shoes whenever you step off it (especially to the restroom). This keeps the training surface clean.
Respect the instructor and your partners. A simple handshake or fist bump before and after training is customary. Listen during instruction, and ask questions — good academies welcome them.
Train with control, not ego. Match your partner’s pace and experience. Your job is to help your training partner improve, not to overpower a beginner.
Tap early, tap often. If you’re caught in a submission, tap. There’s no shame in it. Tapping is how everyone trains hard and stays injury-free for years.
Tell the instructor about injuries. If you have a sore shoulder, a bad knee, or any medical condition, mention it before class so the instructor can adjust.
What to Bring (Quick Checklist)
- Comfortable athletic clothes (t-shirt + shorts or sweatpants)
- A water bottle
- Sandals or slides for walking off the mat
- An open mind — and no prior experience necessary
Everything else, including guidance on whether to eventually buy a gi, is something our instructors will walk you through. You can meet the team on our instructors page before you come in.
After Your First Class
Most first-timers leave a little sweaty, surprised at how much they learned, and curious about the next session. Your $30 intro covers three classes, so you can try the gym fully before deciding. When you’re ready to continue, membership is one price for unlimited access at both locations. Browse our reviews from Northern Nevada families or explore our kids program if you’re signing up a child.

Women’s Self-Defense in Reno
BJJ was specifically designed for smaller practitioners to overcome larger attackers. Our women’s programs provide a supportive environment where female students learn practical escape techniques, positional control, and submissions that work regardless of size disadvantage.
WHY JIU-JITSU
The Most Effective Martial Art for Real Self-Defense
Unlike striking-based martial arts that rely on size and strength, BJJ empowers practitioners of any body type to defend themselves through ground control, joint locks, and choke techniques — no punches required. Statistics show most physical altercations end up on the ground, where BJJ practitioners have a decisive advantage.
Research published in the National Institutes of Health confirms that grappling disciplines like Jiu-Jitsu deliver significant improvements in balance, cognitive function, cardiovascular fitness, and psychological well-being — regardless of age. Students at our Reno academy typically see visible results within their first few weeks of training.
Beyond fitness, our students consistently report reduced anxiety, improved self-confidence, and effective stress relief. Many describe training as “moving meditation” — an hour where work pressures and daily worries simply disappear.
